01.03.2020 Glaciers and a long drive through Haast Pass to Lake Wanaka

We stayed overnight in Franz josef and had a walk up to the Glacier before we carried on the West Coast Road and through the Haast Pass to Lake Wanaka where we are based until the day after tomorrow. Chose not to take the helicopter up onto the glacier but there is an access road and a walk with great views. Think this is the toughest day driving for me even tougher than Whanganui, especially as there has been a lot of damage to the road after the cyclones - lots of one way stretches, unsealed surfaces and more traffic - so more concentration needed especially on the hair pin bends! You can see that this side gets more rain and you could actually be in the highlands somewhere with steep mountains, pine forests waterfalls and green valleys in between. Finally we reached the northern shores of Lake Wanaka which was absolutely breathtaking - aside from getting bitten constantly whilst taking the photographs - must remember to use insect repellant whilst I am here.

Last shot is from our balcony yesterday evening :):) That's me right upto date.
