Taupo is a city that attracts tourist from all over the world with sunshine, a gorgeous lake, river and year round views. Set in the Tongariro National Park and World Heritage Site with a back drop of mountains and surrounded by geo thermal sites and waterfalls I should have expected it to be busy really but when I was stuck in traffic trying to get to the start of my walk today I felt quite let down. I'd had the road almost to myself for the past few days. It also meant that I should expect tourist in vast numbers at all of the places I want to see. So to avoid any further traffic problems, I parked up and set off on a hike along the Waikato River to Huka fall which is known as one of the most beautiful attractions in NZ. The water in the river is crystal clear, you can see straight to the bottom and on a sunny Friday there were plenty of people, kayaking, canoeing, wild swimming or just floating along on this lazy river in the sunshine. At each point there was a beautiful view. It was in the high 20s so I was glad of the shade in the forests along the track. The sun was so hot on the trees that sometimes the warm smell that came off them smelt just like sitting in front of the log burner at home. Had my first sight of bungee jumpers today when I saw a strange looking sign on the path markers - upside down person??? I stopped an watched as two young girls jumped over the side screaming whilst others queued up to "throw themselves over the edge" - too old for that game I'm glad to say. It was thirsty work in the sunshine and I was glad to get to Otumuheke which is a thermal stream with a small cafe. The stream was very popular with lots of locals and visitors alike having a dip - note to self - either wear cossie or take it with you next time. Opportunities to sit in a thermal pool are numerous around hear. I could hear the falls and smell the water before I reached them and wasn't disappointed by the frenzy of aquamarine water spilling over the ledge into the bubbling pool below. I'm afraid my photos may not do it justice but believe me it was absolutely fantastic.
What a day - my walk was 13 kms and I have to admit when I got back to my hotel all I was good for was shower, room service and sleep. Too much sun for me but absolutely worth it. Planning a rest day tomorrow to catch up on this stuff and other admin so you'll have to wait a couple of days for my next blog!!!
